ENGLISH – Yama-no-be-no-michi Path and Wakakusa Yama-yaki in Nara

The Yama-no-be-no-michi path is a very old hiking path between the city Nara and the city Sakurai. Along the way there are many temples, shrines and old gravesites of Japanese Emperors (Tenno).

We walked the hiking trail from the train station Sakurai to the train station Tenri, which is about 16km long. In the winter it’s quite cold, but if you go there in the spring you can enjoy the cherry blossoms and persimmon trees, which are famous for the region. There are also some stalls on the way where you can buy local fruits, vegetables or daifuku (Japanese sweets). We had a very detailed hiking plan which almost had every street, river and sight-seeing spot drawn to it. Also, the toilets had signs on them where and how far the next toilet is. On the hikes in Germany I have not seen something like this… The Omiwa Shrine is one of the oldest Shrines in Japan and very important for the sake brewers. It’s also said that it might be the oldest shrine in Japan, and that white snakes appear from an old tree on the site. That’s why raw eggs are offered there. We couldn’t see the snakes – probably it was too cold!

The hiking path ends in Tenri at the Isonokami Shrine, which is an important Shrine with a long history too.

In the evening we were in Nara to see the Wakakusa Yama-yaki event. Every year at the end of January the grass on Mt. Wakakusa is burned. Before the mountain is set on fire you can see spectacular fireworks, which are not comparable to the ones you can see e.g. in Germany. The various changes of colour and fireworks in the shape of the faces of deers were very impressive.
