Deutsch /ドイツ語 – Im Zug in Japan

English / 英語 – In the train in Japan

I really love to take the train to go to many places in Japan and I also did that back in Germany. The trains are very punctual, especially in Japan, unless it rains very heavily or an earthquake occurs.

That’s why I often notice things in trains that I have never seen before in Germany.

What is very well known, is that many Japanese people sleep in trains – even when they just take it to go to work. I am also one of the people who can sleep well on trains. And in Germany too I often slept in the train on the way to work and back, which was very rare for Germany… I think it’s not very common in Western countries to sleep in the train.

What is very practical in Japan is that the seats in the train are arranged the way many people can fit into it. There are also straps hanging from the ceiling you can use while standing in the train.

In the particularly fast trains (not Shinkansen), all seats are reserved, which means that there are no straps or anything like that. These seats are design in a way so that the backrest can be switched, which means that also four people can sit together. Normally, all seats are oriented so that you sit in the direction of travel, but they can be arranged according to how you would like to sit…

What I recently found on a train like this, are smoking rooms, where smoking is allowed.

In Germany, smoking inside the train is definitely prohibited and there are no rooms for that. You can only smoke in a small area on the platform in train stations. And as far as I know, smoking in the station is not possible in Japan at all.

What I also recently found on the train are reversible footrests. You use one side when you have your shoes on and the other, when you take your shoes off. It’s really very interesting! And you can also easily return it up again with the lever next to it.

There are also monitors on the train that not only show the arrival-time and the next train stations etc., but also the view from the driver’s cabin. So, you can also see the surrounding area.

I will share some more information about travelling with the trains and also in the Shinkansen again.
