English / 英語 – Working in Japan and business manners

At the beginning of this month I started my first real job in Japan.
The business world in Japan is quite different to any other in this world I think, so I bought a book about the business manners to prepare myself well.
Especially in the beginning, when you’re not used to everything, there is much to learn.

In the book is much information about how to dress and how to behave in the office, and also the basics rules. Like that you should be at your work place 10 minutes before the work starts.
And I was quite surprised to read, that it is bad manners to go to work without make-up. It’s considered as rude as when a man doesn’t shave his beard well.
I don’t think anyone in Germany would care about it. But I don’t know about other countries. Maybe it depends on the kind of job too…

The most surprising thing for me was, that it is considered impolite to sit with your legs crossed. In Germany is quite common to sit like this, and I have never thought deeply about it. But since I’ve heard it’s impolite, I stopped sitting like that – at least most of the time. I really want to know if it is considered impolite in other countries too!

I the company safety is very important. I was already given many instructions on that, and whenever an accident occurs, it will be talked about in meetings.
Compared to my previous workplace, the desk is quite small, and there are many people working in the same room. But in comparison to Germany it’s very quiet and you can concentrate really well! Even at lunch time it’s not noisy so you won’t get a head ache.
And the best thing is, that the lights go out at exactly 12 o’clock when the lunch break begins, so you can even sleep in the office when you want to. It feels really nice for the eyes!
And I still don’t have to work overtime with is also very good.

I still have to learn much Japanese for work and especially Kanji. But I have really much fun working so that is a good motivation!
